Why Weight Gain After Menopause (or a Hysterectomy) Is NOT a Willpower Problem

December 22, 2025

If you’re in menopause — or you’ve had a hysterectomy — and the weight keeps creeping up no matter what you do, I want you to hear this clearly:

This is not a willpower issue.

I see so many women blaming themselves:

  • “I must not be disciplined enough.”
  • “I just need to eat less.”
  • “I used to be able to lose weight — what’s wrong with me?”

Nothing is wrong with you.
Your body has changed, and it’s asking for a different approach.

My Story (And Why I Get It)

I had a hysterectomy when I was 50, and it sent me straight into menopause. Suddenly I was dealing with:

  • stubborn belly fat
  • hot flashes
  • no energy
  • mood swings
  • clothes that didn’t fit

I was doing all the things that used to work — eating less, staying active, trying to be “good” — and nothing was changing.

I even remember standing at work, mid–hot flash, sweating so badly that clients were staring and a coworker had to hand me a tissue. I was embarrassed, uncomfortable, and miserable.

That was my breaking point.

Why Traditional Dieting Stops Working in Menopause

Menopause and hysterectomy-related weight gain are driven by hormonal shifts, not calories alone.

When estrogen drops or changes, it affects:

  • where your body stores fat (hello, belly)
  • blood sugar regulation
  • insulin sensitivity
  • cortisol (stress hormone)
  • metabolism

So when you eat less, skip meals, or follow strict diets, your body often responds by:

  • holding onto fat
  • increasing cravings
  • slowing metabolism
  • increasing stress hormones

That’s why “just eat less” backfires during menopause.

What Actually Works Instead

Menopause weight loss is about working with your hormones, not against them.

That means focusing on:

  • whole, fresh foods that stabilize blood sugar
  • eating enough (yes, enough!) to support your metabolism
  • reducing foods that irritate your body
  • gentle, consistent movement
  • mindset and stress support

This isn’t about perfection or restriction.
It’s about nourishment, balance, and sustainability.

You Don’t Need a Strict Diet

One of the biggest fears I hear is:

“I don’t have the willpower for a strict diet anymore.”

Good news — you don’t need one.

In fact, the women who do best in menopause are the ones who stop dieting and start supporting their bodies consistently.

When you give your body what it needs, cravings calm down, energy improves, sleep gets better, and belly fat finally starts responding.

My Mission

After losing 23 pounds, eliminating hot flashes, improving my sleep, and finally losing my menopausal belly fat, my mission became clear:

To help women stop dieting for good and lose weight in a balanced, sustainable way — so they can feel confident, strong, and comfortable in their bodies again.
